Part-Time Jobs
The majority of all DeVry University students work part-time and are able to help meet living expenses through their earnings. The Advisors, located in the Career Services Office, will help students find part-time job opportunities while they are attending school. Since employment depends on local business conditions, DeVry University cannot guarantee job availability. However, the record of part-time placement through the Part-time Job Bank listings is very impressive.
General Information
Eligibility and Starting Salaries
New students are eligible to use the Job Board employment listings beginning with their enrollment in DeVry University. New students should not expect part-time jobs to be in their field of study, but in a wide range of areas. Starting wages average from $6.75 to $11.00 per hour.
Competition
Competition for these jobs is intense and more than one student may apply for the same job opening. First impressions on a job interview are important. Professional attire and appearance will often be a determining factor in whether a person is hired.
Persistence
Students should find jobs as soon as possible. While many jobs may not seem attractive, they at least provide enough money to help pay rent, buy food, and will provide students with a basis from which to seek better future employment. Students are encouraged to accept early offers, and to realize that a job with lower pay than a student desires, is a starting point and better than no pay at all. Students should not leave a job until they have another job offer.
Heavy Work Schedules
It is recommended that students not work more than 25 hours per week. In this manner students can work and still maintain satisfactory academic progress.
Part-Time Job Assistance to Spouses of Students
Married students with spouses who are seeking part-time employment are assisted on a case-by-case basis. Students are encouraged to accompany the spouse to the counseling appointment.
