Arizona Programs
Arizona Private Postsecondary Education Student Financial
Assistance Program (PFAP)
is funded by the state legislature of Arizona for graduates of Arizona
public community colleges who will attend, on a full-time basis, an
eligible private postsecondary institution for a baccalaureate degree.
The total academic yearly award is $1,500. The total lifetime award is
$3,000. An application is available at the Financial Aid office and
must be submitted to the private institution contact listed in the link.
Applications may be submitted throughout the year. Eligible participants
will be considered on a first come, first served basis. Notification
of the award will be mailed to the student and a copy to the institution.
According to Arizona statutes, participants must agree when they accept
the award to pay back the State of Arizona the full amount of the award
if they do not graduate with their bachelor's degree within three
years of receipt of the award. A promissory note must be signed and
accepted by the Commission before the voucher transaction is complete.
The Leveraging Educational Assistance Program (LEAP) in Arizona is funded
through the joint efforts of the Federal Government, the State of
Arizona, and participating postsecondary institutions in Arizona. The
maximum LEAP award may not exceed $2,500 per program year. The minimum
LEAP award per year is $100. At DeVry/Phoenix, the maximum LEAP award is
$1500 per program year due to limited funding in the program.
Arizona Postsecondary Education Grant (PEG) is funded by the State Legislature of Arizona for students of accredited private baccalaureate degree-granting institutions in Arizona. Participants must be a graduate of an Arizona high school or equivalent, enrolled at least half-time in an eligible private postsecondary bachelor degree-granting institution, an Arizona resident for the past five years, United States citizen or eligible non-citizen, and a recent High School graduate with a 2.5 G.P.A. and ranked in the upper 50% of your class, a first time college student over the age of 22 deemed college ready by your school, or a continuing college student making satisfactory academic progress. The total academic yearly award is up to $2,000. The total lifetime award is up to $8,000. Eligible participants will be considered on a first come, first served basis. According to Arizona statutes, participants must agree when they accept the award to pay back the State of Arizona the full amount of the award if they do not graduate with their bachelor's degree within five years of first disbursement of the award. Applications may be submitted throughout the year and students should contact the campus Student Finance office for info on application steps and eligibility requirements.

Return of Title IV Federal Financial Aid
The Education Amendments of 1998 (HEA98) presents a major shift in the requirements for
returning Title IV Federal Financial Aid when a student withdraws from the university.
This change in policy is effective at DeVry University with the beginning of the Fall 2000
semester. This policy governs all federal grant and loan programs (Pell, SEOG, Stafford
Loans, Perkins and PLUS loans), but does not include the Federal Work Study programs.
Because this is a much more complicated process and may leave the student with an immediate
obligation to the U. S. Department of Education, and to DeVry, all students are advised to
consult the Student Finance office before withdrawing.
In general, the new law assumes that a student "earns" federal financial aid awards in
proportion to the number of days completed in the term prior to the student's complete
withdrawal. If a student completely withdraws from school during a term, DeVry must
calculate, according to a specific formula, the portion of the scheduled Title IV
financial assistance that the student has earned and is therefore entitled to
retain, until the time that the student withdrew. If a student receives (or
DeVry receives on the student's behalf) more assistance than he or she earns,
the unearned funds must be returned to the Department of Education or to the
Federal Stafford or parent's Federal PLUS loan lenders. This calculation
could leave the student with a balance due to DeVry. The student is responsible
for paying any remaining charges on their DeVry Educard account.
