Student Handbook - Veterans' Benefits

DeVry is approved by the State Approval Agency for Veterans Benefits. The Veterans' Affairs Coordinator on campus, Travis Hurt, is located in the Financial Aid Office, Ext.506, and will be happy to assist students having problems or questions concerning their veterans' benefits.

Benefits and Eligibility:

Monthly education allowances are paid by the Department of Veterans' Affairs (hereafter referred to as "Department") directly to the veteran student or other eligible person to help with tuition payments and living expenses. Actual amounts are available by calling the Department. Disabled veterans may be eligible for complete rehabilitation training. Eligibility is determined by the Department.

If a student has not previously applied for or received benefits under the current law, DeVry will help make arrangements for the student with the Department.

Satisfactory Enrollment and Progress:

The following training time equivalency table indicates the required number of semester hours in all programs for which students must be enrolled in order to receive Department assistance:

Full-time12 or more credit hour
3/4 time9 to 11 credit hours
1/2 time6 to 8 credit hours
Less than ½ timeless than 6 credit hours

A student must maintain satisfactory academic progress to receive Department Educational Benefits under Chapters 30, 31, 32, 35 and 106 of the U. S. Code. The law requires the educational institution to report unsatisfactory progress (according to the established policy of the school) to the Department.

The school will report such unsatisfactory progress when the student accumulates unsatisfactory grades in the equivalent of more credit hours than the minimum full-time load for Department purposes (12 credit hours).

Unsatisfactory progress also includes those students not progressing at a rate that will permit their graduation within the approved length of the course, based on the training time paid by the Department.

Appeal and Reinstatement of Benefits:

If education benefits are terminated due to a determination of unsatisfactory progress, Department counseling is required before the benefits may be reinstated, even if the student continues in the same course at the same school. An appeal can be made to the Department to waive unsatisfactory progress if extenuating or mitigating circumstances can be proved. The veteran is advised to inform the Veterans Affairs' Coordinator of unusual circumstances surrounding the unsatisfactory progress and to schedule counseling with the Department Office. This action will prevent any excessive delays in resuming Department Educational Benefits.

Tutorial Assistance:

The Department will pay veterans up to one hundred dollars ($100) a month for tutorial assistance in courses. This benefit does not affect the veterans' entitlement in any way but is in addition to the entitled amount. Tutorial assistance is available under Chapter 30, 31, 32, 35 and 106. As with other veterans' benefits, information about tutoring is available through the Veterans' Affairs Coordinator in the Financial Aid Office.
