Student Handbook - Day TripsIn Arizona:
Grand Canyon
The Canyon's South Rim is open year round with nature walks, mule rides into the Canyon, rim drives, camping, hiking and a variety of other attractions. The Student Association has sponsored several bus trips to the Canyon at a nominal fee (approximately 4 1/2 hours and 220 miles from Phoenix).
Lake Havasu City
Lake Havasu and the Colorado River. Lake Havasu City is famous for its London Bridge, reconstructed brick by brick to look exactly as it did in England (approximately 4 hours and 200 miles).
Lake Powell
Famous for its scenic beauty as well as its size, Lake Powell is a favorite vacation spot. It is 186 miles long, with 98 canyons and 1960 miles of shoreline (approximately 6 hours and 330 miles).
Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
Other places to visit include the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, the Saguaro National Monument, Kitt Peak National Observatory and Mount Lemon Ski Resort (approximately 2 hours and 120 miles).
Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon
Sedona, one of the most scenic areas in Arizona, is an artist and tourist colony located in the midst of beautiful mesa of Red Rock. There are plenty of shops, galleries, restaurants and hiking trails in the area (approximately 2 hours and 115 miles).
The Snow Bowl and Flagstaff
Located at 7,000-feet altitude in a small valley among the pines and aspens, Flagstaff is the winter sports capital of Arizona. The Snow Bowl provides excellent downhill skiing and cross-country trails (approximately 3 hours and 150 miles). Arizona Snow Bowl, (520) 779-1951.
Outside Arizona:
Las Vegas
Las Vegas is the "gambling capital" of the nation, with all types of casino gambling, first-rate entertainment and a 24-hour lifestyle. Close by is the spectacular Hoover Dam, which has guided tours (approximately 6 hours and 300 miles).
Laughlin
On the borders of Nevada, Arizona and California, Laughlin is a new resort town with complete casino gambling. Inexpensive "quick turn-around" bus trips are available from the Valley of the Sun (approximately 4 hours and 200 miles).
Los Angeles
The Greater Los Angeles area, a pleasant one-day drive, provides a world of entertainment and fun, including its beaches, Disneyland, Magic Mountain, major league sports, Hollywood studio tours and first-rate concerts and theater (approximately 8 hours and 400 miles).
Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico)
Sixty-five miles south of the Arizona Border on the Sea of Cortez, Rocky Point is popular for its deep-sea fishing and its sunny beaches. A tourist visa and Mexican car insurance must be purchased at the border. The carrying of a birth certificate and/or drivers license is also recommended (approximately 6 hours and 300 miles).
San Diego
San Diego is very popular with Arizonan's (known as "Zonies" to the locals in California) with its wonderful beaches and numerous attractions such as the San Diego Zoo, Sea World and the San Diego Wild Animal Park (approximately 7 hours and 350 miles).
